Hooked on air

Human flight is kind of a New Zealand thing. It’s in our blood. Our national bird may not be able to fly, but Kiwis have been chucking ourselves off things, out of things and into things for decades, relentlessly chasing flight since even before Richard Pearse flew the world’s first aircraft (into a hedge) in 1903. (Sorry not sorry Wright Brothers, but yeh, we basically got there first.)
Our Story
Over the years New Zealand has pioneered a jaw-dropping range of ways to take to the air. We love to fly. But despite our Kiwi ingenuity, like everyone else, we’ve always dreamt of flying without straps, lines, wings, cables and motors, completely untethered to any man-made flying machine. The dream of flight is universal. As someone once said, if sitting in a plane is flying, then sitting in a boat is swimming. Until recently, the closest you could get to human flight – real human flight – was skydiving. Most people think that skydivers jump because they’re addicted to the adrenaline rush. But that’s not it at all. We jump because we love to fly. The thrill of flying through the air, using your arms and legs as wings, is nothing short of incredible.

When iFLY invented its vertical wind tunnel technology in 1998 , it meant that everyone – not just skydivers – could get an authentic feeling of what it means to fly, of what brings us back again and again to the rush of freefall. iFLY Queenstown’s vertical wind tunnel creates an exact replica of the freefall wind that makes skydiving possible. As you advance your bodyflight skills, you can learn to use your body to move in the airflow, completely under your own control, like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. If you close your eyes, you can’t tell the difference between skydiving from a plane, and flying in iFLY’s wind tunnel on Brecon Street.

This is why we knew we had to bring iFLY to Queenstown. We’re skydivers. We’re hooked on air – really BIG air. We started this journey in 2012 when we decided that there could be no better place for an iFLY indoor skydiving tunnel than New Zealand. Six years later and iFLY Queenstown is flying in the heart of the world’s adventure capital. It’s been quite a ride.

We hope you’ll come and visit us to find out what it’s all about.
